The first manual (worldwide) with nautical terms expressed in sign language.
Being able to communicate with signs precisely, even on a boat. That is the great ambition of this manual, first in Europe and probably in the whole world, to present a series of nautical signs. It is a revolution for the hearing-impaired, but also a valuable support for any crew, since on board it is not always easy to communicate from stern to bow. This could be a great resource for when the wind is howling, the sails slam or the engine is on.
To have a specific sign that is equivalent to screaming “luff”, or “fasten the sail”, could be an important completion for the communication on board. It would be the first nautical glossary ever, and hopefully it will be organically included in the sign language vocabulary.
It would be like a big little revolution, since for the hearing-impaired sailing is basically nonexistent because up until now it was impossible to communicate nautical terms clearly.
Edoardo Ricci is a passionate sailor, a sail and sail therapy instructor, both for Lega Navale and AICS. That is the reason why he sailed with crews whose members had various disability: autistic people, blind people, and of course deaf people. With the latest he used Signs for Sailing, earning the compliments of the minister of disability Alessandra Locatelli.
